The Cook County Environmental Control Department started as an Air Pollution Control Bureau under the Building and Zoning Department in 1963. The Cook County Board in 1963 realized the importance of having environmental control legislation to preserve, protect and improve the air, water, and land resources for present and future citizens of the community. Today that community numbers about five million people with approximately half of that population residing in suburban Cook County.
At that time, the Board of Commissioners also adopted the Cook County Environmental Control Ordinance under which the Environmental Department carries out the duties and rules of the ordinance throughout Cook County outside the City of Chicago. The ordinance has been amended several times since its original adoption to reflect changes in air pollution control strategies. The current ordinance contains regulations to permit and control emissions of air pollutants, noise, vibration and indoor asbestos abatement.
The Department provides timely responses to citizen complaints about environmental matters in suburban Cook County. Citizen can call 24 hours a day at (312) 603-8200.
